Originally, Vlaardingen was a true fishing town. For centuries, its name and ‘herring’ were always bracketed together. The city enjoys a rich history and has had town privileges for almost 750 years. If you have enough time to go out and explore Vlaardingen, take a walk through the old city centre, along the port, the Markt and the grand warehouse buildings. If you’ve got a bit more time, the green hinterland, the nearby beach and the cities of Rotterdam, Schiedam or Delft are also worth a visit. The region has plenty to offer for an exciting day out.
